MILLION-BOOKS-PROJECT-IMAGE

The Yusuf Karodia Foundation had embarked on implementing one of its most exciting social campaigns, the Million Books Project.

Professor Yusuf Karodia is on a mission to donate one million books to get learners at disadvantaged schools reading. The project was conceived in response to the extreme lack of library facilities in schools in disadvantaged communities.

The project will result in the provisioning of mobile libraries to foundation and intermediate phase learners across South Africa, at under-resourced, deserving schools.

Children’s literacy, especially in underperforming schools in South Africa, is of major concern as learners in the foundation phase need to read with understanding and comprehension. Developing these skills in the formative years is of paramount importance. The Yusuf Karodia Foundation believes that providing appropriate reading stimuli will develop in the learner the skills in reading for meaning.

In total, approximately one hundred thousand books have been placed in schools to date. Books are sourced from variety of local and international suppliers.

The mobile libraries can be wheeled from one classroom to another and learners can easily access a diverse collection of books.
